cinema remixed & reloaded: black women artists and the moving image since 1970 Contemporary Arts Museum Houston Through Jan. 4
Collaborating with The Spelman College Museum of Fine Art, Cinema Remixed & Reloaded is the first exhibition to examine the critical contributions of black women
film and video artists to the field of contemporary art. Featuring projections,
installations, interactive CD-ROM projects, experimental film and video work,
the exhibition spans across generations and geographic boundaries to present
work by more than 40 artists. Works by established artists who began working
with the medium in the 1970s, such as Adrian Piper, Carroll Parrott Blue, Senga
Nengudi, Julie Dash and Howardena Pindell, are presented alongside works
created by mid-career and emerging artists, such as Carrie Mae Weems, Lorna
Simpson, Bernie Searle, Kara Walker, Mar
ìa Magdelena Campos-Pons, Elizabeth Axtman, Zoë Charlton, Jessica and Xaviera Simmons.
A significant catalogue co-published by the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston and
The Spelman College Museum of Fine Art accompanies this exhibition and
functions as an essential reader on the subject of black women artists and the

The Sounds I See: Photographs of Musicians Museum Of Fine Arts,Through Jan. 19
The Sounds I See: Photographs of Musicians presents more than 90 photographs from the museum’s permanent collection, most of them never previously exhibited. While some of
the photographs are formal portraits, the exhibition focuses on those taken
during performances in auditoriums, nightclubs and symphony halls.
The centerpieces of the exhibition are two series of photographs being shown for
the first time: 44 close-up portraits of contemporary guitarists by Ralph
Gibson and 19 photographs of French singer Edith Piaf in performance by Emil
Cadoo.

Max Ernst in the Garden of Nymph AncolieThe Menil Collection, Through Feb. 15
Max Ernst in the Garden of Nymph Ancolie is conceived around the mural Pétales et jardin de la nymphe Ancolie. The surrealist work, with a bird-like figure emerging from monumental curling
red flower petals, was painted by German-born artist Max Ernst in 1934 for the
wall of a night club in Z
ürich. It is the only existing mural by the artist that has survived in its
entirety. The Menil Collection will be the first venue to showcase the mural in
its fully restored state.
Approximately 75 important and rarely exhibited paintings, drawings and
sculptures by Ernst from the early 1930s to the late 1940s will be shown. For

Perspectives 164: Stephanie Syjuco Contemporary Arts Museum Houston Through Feb. 22
In her first solo museum show, San Francisco-based artist Stephanie Syjuco uses
bootlegging, counterfeiting and re-appropriation tactics in her photographs,
videos and sculptures.
By confronting the limitations, proliferations and nuances of today’s global economy and digital technologies, Syjuco investigates, interrupts and
reinvigorates sites of transcultural communication, international capitalism
and modern aesthetics.
Prospectives 164: Stephane Syjuco features the artist’s photographic series The Village (Small Encampments), in which she takes viewers on a journey through the Philippines and her
apartment by inserting diorama-like cutouts she
’s constructed from tourist photos posted on the Internet into her domestic
space, as well as video and sculpture.
