2nd Place Small Bathrooms
Deco Design by Linda McKenna, CKD, CBD;
Custom Kitchens by John Wilkins, Inc.
This small bathroom remodel project is located in a 14-story Art Deco building
from the 1930s, which is listed in the National Registry of Historic Buildings.
In keeping with the building
’s original era, the new owner sought to eliminate the bland 1960s-style bathroom
and restore it to an Art Deco classic.
Conforming to the motif, custom decorative ceramic tiles were designed that
featured a chevron and swags in black, with red and hunter green accents
against a bright backdrop of matte yellow field tiles. Within the black border
of the floor perimeter, matte yellow hex tiles complement the unglazed black
porcelain hex tile used for the shower pan. A vintage pedestal sink and toilet
and a period faucet and shower valve in polished nickel are additional deco
accents. An antique ceiling fixture and sconces give authenticity to the 1930s
feel of the new deco-styled bathroom.

A Bath for All Ages by Jan E. Regis, CMKBD;
Binns Kitchen + Bath Design
The client’s goal was to modernize an outdated bathroom while creating a contemporary, neutral room that
would be user-friendly for grandparents and grandchildren alike.
A clean, modern appearance was achieved by introducing angles and a linear tile
layout. An asymmetrical soaking tub is reflected in angle by the shower seat.
The contrasting effects of large and micro-tiles, along with those of
engineered stone versus granite, helped convey a spa-like environment. Other
details, such as glass fixtures and matte cabinetry, added to this atmosphere.
Overall taupe and beige with the opposing honed-black granite and carbon
porcelain tiles bring interest in color to a neutral space. The asymmetry and
colors revitalize what was once an old-fashioned space.
2nd Place Large Bathrooms
A Lady’s Retreat by Cheryl Hamilton-Gray, CKD;
Hamilton-Gray Design, Inc.
The second bath of empty-nesters was transformed into the wife’s customized private space. In an environmentally-friendly fashion, her personal
taste directed the choices in this design. A bidet and soaking tub with
contemporary fixtures and fittings enhanced the modern flair of the home. A
long double sink Pullman was replaced with a single one to allow space for the
bidet, situated adjacent to the toilet.
Thick white CaesarStone counters and backsplash add brightness to the room while
Plyboo, used on the sink cabinetry and wall, contrasts warmly against cool grey
basalt on the floor and surrounding the tub. A subtle decorative element was
created through iridescent glass mosaic tiles vertically dividing the mirror
behind the sink.
What was a long narrow space now appears more open with a wall-hung toilet and
bidet. A new appropriately-sized window completes this sleek private refuge for
the lady of the house.

Soothing Spa by Cheryl Kees Clendenon

In Detail Kitchen and Bath
The challenge in this condominium was to efficiently use the space of a master
bath, while giving the bachelor homeowner the design presence he wanted.
Consideration of environmental impact was also key in the choice of products. A
small niche to house a linen tower and hamper was carved out of a closet that
backs up to the bathroom wall. This targeted storage allows for a more
sophisticated vanity area free of clutter. The custom-designed Lyptus wood
vanity is dark-stained and has a grid pattern shelf on the bottom, in addition
to hidden drawers on either side of the sink.
Two small floating shelves and a wood backdrop for hanging the mirror add visual
interest to the space. The wood above the mirror was recreated to match
existing slats over the doorway and tie them into the other room elements. An
existing green slate tile floor remained. This comfortable masculine design
highlights simple yet notable points in the room, while eliminating a
nondescript standard condo bathroom.
