heavy metal exhibits at hccc
The Houston Center for Contemporary Craft rocks the metal arts with two new exhibitions: Iron: Forged, Tempered, Quenched on view through May 16, and eXtreme Tea, on view through March 21.
Iron: Forged, Tempered, Quenched celebrates the rich history of American blacksmithing by bridging historical and contemporary works and illustrating the wide variety of blacksmithing techniques and processes currently practiced in the U.S. The exhibition is one of the most significant exhibitions of blacksmithed objects in decades.
The exhibition educates audiences about the processes used to create historical and contemporary ironwork. Contemporary pieces are exhibited alongside important historic works, such as farm implements and tools, to allow visitors to visually identify how blacksmithing artists combine contemporary design sensibilities with historical traditions and techniques to create their pieces. The exhibition features more than 40 pieces by 38 artists from across the U.S.
eXtreme Tea is a surprising exhibition of tea infusers and strainers—seemingly mundane household items that hold loose tea leaves for brewing in a pot or cup. However, because of the small scale and potential for minute decorative detail, these items present an exciting challenge for contemporary artists.
Located in the Museum District at 4848 Main Street, HCCC is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday, noon-5 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, call 713-529-4848 or visit www.crafthouston.org.

upcoming events at Children’s
museum of houston
Kids will be able to visit the new Building Brainstorm exhibition—a design studio where kids can explore what it’s like to be an architect, designer and engineer.
Plan a dream home or a dog house, build a skyscraper model, find the best arrangement of an apartment model ’s rooms and furniture, construct a structure you can crawl through and much more in the bilingual show. The exhibit introduces you to the design process, including collaborative problem-solving, planning, revisions and execution.
Step inside Building Brainstorm and find a kid-friendly studio environment inspired by the philosophy and aesthetic of mid-century designers Charles and Ray Eames. Filled with architectural plans, photographs, models and authentic building elements, the show features interactive workbenches and job sites that equip diminutive designers to brainstorm creative solutions for architectural and engineering challenges. Discover the basics of buildings while exploring the process of creating structures that match the needs of the people inside them.
Lighting considerations in building design become clear at the Window House Challenge, when kids experiment with changeable clear, translucent and opaque panels in a house made of windows. Guests can create the ideal floor plan for a model home by arranging the rooms and miniature furniture in just the right way.
Museum hours are Tuesday-Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.;Thursday, 9 a.m.-8 p.m.; and Sunday, noon-5 p.m. For more information or a complete schedule of events, go to www.cmhouston.org or call 713-522-1138.
