(1) Women’s Hall of Fame
Eleven civic leaders were applauded at the Greater Houston Women’s Hall of Fame Gala. Tapped for their accomplishments: (l-r, back row) Diedra
Fontaine, Gracie Saenz, Maxine Williams, Martha Turner, Galveston Mayor Lyda
Ann Thomas; (front row) Linda Lorelle, Ileana Trevino, Margaret Williams,
Zarine Boyce and Rose Cullen.
(2) Jeans and Jewels
Jeans & Jewels…a Texas size party… turned out to be a huge success for NAM (Northwest Assistance Ministries).
Adding luster to the evening are: (l-r) co-chair Susan Byram, Dana Tyson of
99.1 FM, honoree Susan Diehl and co-chair Kristie Cambell (Susan
’s daughter).
(3) Living Bank Gala
“Celebrate Life” was the theme of The Living Bank gala, which involved Ben and Pat Bono, and
Sally and Rigo Flores and a committee of their five daughters! Both Ben and
Rigo received transplants that saved their lives.
(4) Kissing the Blarney Stone
Even though the annual Irish Gala for the University of St. Thomas is held in
the fall, there was plenty of green as co-chairs Bob and Gayle Longmire and
honorees Colleen and George McCullough raised funds for Irish Studies.
(5) The BASH for U.C.P.
Talk about outrageous costumes … the BASH for U.C.P. brought out the weird and wild in 850 guests, including
(l-r) Grant and Lisa Braley, Erin Keeny, Frank Breely and Jenny Oates, who
dressed up and came out to help raise $75,000 at a Halloween fundraiser.
It’s “Hearts & Flowers” time, which is a good thing because the décor landscape has been looking a little bleak since Christmas. I love holiday
decorations, hate taking them down, and look forward to putting up my Valentine
’s heart theme as soon as it’s decent to do so. Of course, nobody loves hearts in all sizes, shapes and
materials more than
Warner Roberts. Some years ago, the dynamo collected more than 130 one-of-a-kind “art hearts” from celebrities including George Strait, Colin Powell, former President George Bush and many astronauts, athletes, artists, actors and musicians for the “Celebration of Hearts” art exhibit in
the Denton A. Cooley Building Texas Heart Institute lobby. Warner is so giving
and loving that she
’s called Houston’s Sweetheart by her legions of fans.
The Texas Heart Institute makes headlines again on Feb. 3 when the Denton A.
Cooley, M.D. Leadership Award is presented to
Dan and Jan Duncan for their invaluable support. Cornelia and Meredith Long are the chairs. Call 832-355-3792 for information.
And while we’re talking about hearts and Valentine’s Day, here’s a perfect way to entertain your sweetheart and raise money to fight heart
disease and stroke. The gorgeous invitations to the Feb. 13 Keep the Beat Heart
Ball are out and co-chairs
Stephen and Debbie Letwin have done such an amazing job generating well-heeled support for the American
Heart Association that it looks like the 2010 gala will be a record-breaker.
Get your tickets by calling 713-610-5003.
If you like “Champagne & Chocolate” (and who doesn’t?) you must be at the Feb. 12 Evening of Romance for The Gaston LeNotre
Scholarship. Longtime culinary connoisseur
Cleverly Stone will be honored for her founding role in Houston Restaurant Week, which
benefits the Houston Food Bank.
Philamena Baird and Paul-David Van Atta are co-chairs of this supper club-themed evening, and they really know how to
throw a party!
Of course Mardi Gras unfolds this month with a slew of festivities. On Feb. 12, Tilman and Paige Fertitta host their 14th annual San Luis Salute–always one of the best parties of the year. “Party on the Moon” will play as hundreds of costumed guests support UTMB Galveston. Get more
information at 409-744-1500. And the University of St. Thomas holds its
“Court of Diamond Jubilee” on Fat Tuesday, Feb. 16. Minnie and Will Baird are planning an over-the-top evening with music by Mango Punch and an exciting
auction.
The Ballet Ball pushes the edges of creativity in its own way Feb. 20 with its “Surreal Movement”-themed gala. Co-chairs Jana and Richard Fant, and Laura and John Spalding are having fun with this one!
Houston’s Social Treasures were unveiled at the fabulous Social Book Launch party, and photos of these community leaders will be gracing the pages of
the 2010 book, which lists all things
social in our city. The honorees are: Pastors Kirbyjon and Suzette Caldwell; Ann Berry, Leila Gilbert and Liz Jameson (sisters); Nancy Dinerstein, Debbie and Rudy Festari; Aileen Gordon, Frann Lichtenstein and
Jill Deutser (3 generations); Holly Moore Kastleman and Jim Kastleman; Anne and Dr. John Mendelsohn; Beth Sanders Moore and Jess Moore; Kappy Muenzer; Barbara and Corbin Robertson Jr.; Anita and Gerald Smith, and Evin Thayer.
