Houston Friends of Music welcomes the Leipzig String Quartet to Stude Concert
Hall on Thursday, Feb. 26, at 8 p.m. for one
performance only.
Although Houston Friends of Music has presented the Leipzig String Quartet to
Houston audiences before, this concert will be the quartet
’s first in Houston with new violinist Stefan Arzberger, formerly an assistant
principal of first violins for the Gewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig.
The Leipzig String Quartet will perform Mendelssohn: Quartet No. 2 in A Minor,
Op. 13; Heinrich Isaac: Sequentia (from Choralis Constantinus, 1508);
Beethoven: Quartet No. 15 in A Minor, Op. 132.
Formed in 1988, the Leipzig String Quartet is widely acclaimed as one of the
most exciting string quartets in the world.
Stude Concert Hall is located at The Alice Pratt building on the Rice University
campus, entrance 18 off Rice Boulevard or entrance 8 off University. Parking is
located in West Lot 1 near Rice Stadium.
4th annual komen pink tie gala, feb. 28
The Houston affiliate of Susan G. Komen will hold its Cure 4th Annual Pink Tie
Gala and Luxury Auction on Feb. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Omni Hotel.
Funds raised by the Pink Tie Gala will help to further conduct the research,
education, screening and treatment needed to help fight breast cancer in the
Greater Houston Area. Kroger Food Stores is the sponsor of the gala. Tickets
are $350 per person for the dinner and after party.

Chapelwood United Methodist Women’s 46th Annual Spring Thing Market will take place March 4 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and
March 5 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at Chapelwood United Methodist Church, 11140 Greenbay
Drive.
Spring Thing is eagerly anticipated as one of Houston’s favorite Spring Markets, featuring more than 80 unique vendors. The market not
only provides an exceptional and diverse shopping experience, but also raises
funds for global and local missions benefiting women and children. The vast
offerings available to shoppers include jewelry, art, clothing, hand crafted
gift items, home accessories, Easter specialties, stationery, crafts, food
products and garden items.
Spring Thing Market includes an expansive silent auction and lunch served on
both days from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. for $10.
Admission is free. The church is located between Memorial Drive and Piney Point
Road near the Voss intersection in the heart of the Memorial Villages.
A special Preview Party will be held on March 3 from 5 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Tickets
for the Preview Party are $10 and include light hors d

girl scout cookie sales, through march 29
The Girl Scout cookie program is a familiar part of American culture. For more
than 80 years, Girl Scouts, with the enthusiastic support of their families,
have participated in the country
’s premiere entrepreneurial and economic literacy program. In fact, many
successful businesswomen today say they got their start selling Girl Scout
cookies.
Cookies are still $3.50 per box and have zero grams of trans fat per serving.
Beginning Feb. 20, Girl Scout troops will sell cookies outside neighborhood
grocery stores. Cookie booths will be held until March 29.

Pin Oak Charity Horse Show Celebrates 64th Season
The Pin Oak Charity Horse Show, the country’s oldest and most prestigious horse competition, announced the launch of its
64th season. This year
’s show will be held, once again, at the Great Southwest Equestrian Center in
Katy from March 18-29. It was also announced that BBVA Compass will be
returning as the lead sponsor of the show.
With a recent commitment of $300,000, Pin Oak is now helping build Texas
Children
’s first hospital outside the Medical Center and one of the largest suburban
pediatric hospitals in the country, Texas Children
’s Hospital West Campus. The gift will support the Hematology/Oncology services
at the new hospital.
The Pin Oak Charity Horse Show will be held over a two-week period and will
feature a wide array of equestrian talent featuring hunters and jumpers,
American Saddlebreds, Andalusians, Welsh ponies, and new for 2009, Dressage and
the United Mountain Horse breed. The crown jewels of the event take place
throughout the two weeks. Saturday evening, Week One features a $30,000 Grand
Prix and championship finals; Week Two features the $15,000 USHJA International
Hunter Derby hosted by Valobra Jewelry and Antiques on Friday and the Momentum
Audi /West Houston Audi $30,000 Grand Prix on Saturday. All of these events
have ringside galas and special entertainment.
No tickets are required Tuesdays-Saturdays. Tickets are required for March 21
and March 28 at 6 p.m. General admission tickets are $10 for adults; children
12 and under are free. Sponsorship Opportunities are available for the gala
dining experience.

Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park: Houston’s Spring Art Awakening
Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park is Houston’s spring art awakening each March. Set for Friday, March 27, through Sunday,
March 29, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the award-winning juried art event is the only
festival to take place in Memorial Park, the city
’s premiere public park enclave.
Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park welcomes more than 300 visual and
performing artists from around the corner and around the world, including
featured artist Larry Stephenson, creator of the whimsical painting, A Day at
the Airport. The artists, whose works represent 19 media formats, transform the
park
’s tree-lined, 1.1-mile loop into a canopied outdoor art gallery, bursting with
fine art and multi-cultural music and dance.
Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park showcases clay, drawing/pastel,
fiber/textiles, furniture, glass, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media,
painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, watercolor and wood creations.
To engage budding artists, the Festival sponsors an Emerging Artists program
encouraging area high school students to create and exhibit their 3-D
installation and 2-D art in the park. Younger children will enjoy the on-site
Capital One Bank Creative Zone, an interactive area designed for children and
families to explore the fun of art such as Mardi Gras mask making, Row House
magnets, enamel pins, mini art car building, ornamental rocks, spangles that
dangle, wax hand sculptures and chalk designs. All proceeds of donations made
in the Capital One Bank Creative Zone are divided equally among the festival
’s participating nonprofit partners.
There is no public parking in Memorial Park. The Festival provides free shuttle
service 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. to and from Memorial Park on Friday from Northwest
Mall on Hwy. 290; and Saturday and Sunday from Northwest Mall and Downtown:
Memorial Drive at Rusk, Rusk at Smith and Smith at Capitol.
The pie dialogues, feb. 26-march 22
The Main Street Theater presents the world premiere of The Pie Dialogues Feb.
26-March 22. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays; 8 p.m. on Fridays and
Saturdays; and 3 p.m. on Sundays.
The Pie Dialogues follows Dawn and Sean through their lives as parents and
individuals. Through a series of eight scenes representing eight different
junctures in their lives, the play traces Pie
’s journey—and that of her parents—from toddlerhood to womanhood.
Ticket prices are $20-$26 on Thursdays; $25-$32 on Fridays; and $30-$36 on
Saturdays.

22nd annual ConocoPhillips Rodeo Run, feb. 28
The 22nd Annual ConocoPhillips Rodeo Run, which includes a 10K race and 5K fun
run/walk, will take place on Feb. 28.
The event raises scholarship funds for Texas youth and will once again lead the
Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo parade past thousands of cheering spectators
in downtown Houston.
Runners and walkers will experience Houston’s only point-to-point 10K race and 5K fun run/walk in a festive atmosphere that
celebrates Houston
’s heritage. A combination of Texas flavor and hospitality, along with a
Texas-size post-race party, makes the event one of the most popular and
memorable races in the region.
The costume contest begins at 9 a.m. and the race begins at 9:40 a.m. at the
intersection of Texas and Smith.
