cirque imagination presents montage, Jan. 7-11
Cirque Imagination presents Montage at the Stafford Center Performing Arts Theatre from Jan. 7-11.
It is a grand show of circus daring and skill, starring former members of Cirque
du Soleil
’s Mystere, O, Sultimbanco, Alegria and Quidam. This production aims to defy the
perception of what is possible, fusing strength, flexibility and technical
skill, fostering an appreciation for the beauty and capabilities of the human
body.

Radio Music Theatre presents A Fertle Holiday until Jan. 10. Performances will be held every Thursday and Friday at 8:30 p.m.;
and Saturday at 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.
A Fertle Holiday chronicles the Fertle family’s trouble-ridden reunion as they attempt to entertain rich relatives from San
Diego.

Moneyville at children’s museum
Follow the money trail and embark on an electrifying trip to Moneyville through Jan. 18. This pulsating “city” shows how money makes the world go round as visitors learn about the history
and culture behind today

ice skating at discovery green
Outdoor ice skating continues at Discovery Green until Jan. 19.
The Ice at Discovery Green spans 7,200 square feet of the model boat basin on
Kinder Lake and includes a toddler ice rink, skate shop, snack shop and gift
shop as well as private skating instruction.
Regular hours are Monday-Thursday, 4 p.m.-9 p.m.; Fridays, Saturdays and school
holidays, 10 a.m.-11 p.m. and 10 a.m.-7 p.m. on Sundays. Rink admission is

$10 for all ages and includes skate rental.
After the New Year, watch the ice fly at an Ice Carving Event on Jan. 10 at 10
a.m. Eight ice artists from around the U.S. will use chainsaws and blow torches
to transform large blocks of ice into frozen masterpieces. The finished
sculptures will be lit and displayed as long as they last. From 5 p.m.-6 p.m.,
the work will be judged by a panel of art and ice experts, as well as park
visitors. Ice-carving master Reverend Butter of DLG Ice Factory will perform a
45-minute carving to live music by band Downfall 2012 at 6:15 p.m.

The quest for high bear: a boy’s odyssey through indian country 1925-1939 exhibit at hmns
Journey into The Quest for High Bear: A Boy’s Odyssey Through Indian Country 1925-1939 and experience a lost world of American Indian heritage at the Museum of Natural
Science. Gaze in wonder at the brilliant colors of Apache and Lakota dresses,
marvel at the craftsmanship of American Indian war bonnets and stand in awe of
the prehistoric Anasazi and Mogollon ceramic vessels, a few of the many
extraordinary artifacts collected by Gordon W. Smith throughout his life.
The Quest for High Bear also contains dozens of examples of beautifully hand-crafted American Indian
necklaces, as well as examples of American Indian clothing; ranging from beaded
dresses and vests, to beaded moccasins from the far corners of the country.
Tickets to the exhibit are included in general admission: $10 for adults; $7 for
children (3-11), seniors (62+), and college students with a valid ID; free for
museum members; $2.50 school groups; and $4.50 for groups of 20 or more. For

VIEWFINDER: New Images from Texas Artists, through Jan. 10
FotoFest and the Houston Center for Photography join together in a first-ever
exhibition collaboration to commission and present a new show of emerging Texas
photographic artists. This exhibit features 15 artists from across the state and
is the third in the
Talent in Texas series. The exhibit will be split between the two spaces—FotoFest Headquarters downtown and the Houston Center for Photography in the
Museum District.
Viewfinder explores the wide scope of photographic art practice today from traditional
film-based still photography to video and installation work.
Friends of Music presents the Shanghai Quartet and Wang Guowei, jan. 13
Houston Friends of Music welcomes the Shanghai Quartet to Stude Concert Hall on Jan. 13 at 8 p.m. for one performance only. The concert will feature world-renowned guest artist, Wang Guowei, one of the
top erhu soloists of his generation. The erhu, a Chinese, two-stringed vertical
fiddle, has a history that spans more than 500 years.
Stude Concert Hall is located at The Alice Pratt building on the campus of Rice
University.
TRANSPARENCY:EXPOSING GRAPHIC DESIGN, JAN. 21-FEB.11
The Rice Design Alliance will present a four part lecture series on Wednesdays
from Jan. 21 - Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. in the brown Auditorium of the Museum of Fine
Arts.
The lectures will discuss how graphic design as a discipline and practice
embracces a wide range of cognitive, experiential, and aestetic skill,
including typography, identity, branding, print design, interaction/experience,
information and sustainability. This lecture series will feature four iconic
graphic innovators.
Series Tickets are $20 for RDA, MFAH members; $15, 65 and older; $10, students
with I; and $35 for others. Single tickets (upon availability at the door)
range from $7 - $10.
