2009 Houston Water Garden and Pond Tour
The Houston Pond Society and the Lone Star Koi Club invite you to the 2009 Water
Garden and Pond Tour, Saturday and Sunday, June 6 and June 7, from 10 a.m.-5
p.m. This is a self-guided tour of more than 30 private water gardens and
ponds, across Harris County and beyond. All are residential settings and
showcase water features ranging in size from decorative patio fountains, to
small backyard garden ponds, to high-tech koi ponds, to huge multi-pond
landscapes. There
’s a photography contest, so bring your camera.
Ask questions. Get firsthand insight into this fascinating hobby. Each location
is different and unique. Tickets are $10 for both days and can be purchased at
any of the participating homes. Go to
www.houstonpondsociety.org or www.lonestarkoi.com to find the home nearest to you, or purchase advance tickets at Nelson Water
Gardens in Katy. With a ticket, you will also get a brochure with a description
of each pond, a map and detailed driving directions. The ponds are spread over
the greater Houston area, so the tour is divided into two sections; some ponds
are available only on Saturday, and the rest are open only on Sunday.
Call Dan Cook, pond tour chairman, at 713-822-5515 for more detailed
information.
summer exhibits at
houston center for contemporary craft
This summer, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft presents two exhibitions that
challenge the traditional uses of wood, textiles and other materials, while
celebrating the subversive and unexpected.
Challenge VII: dysFUNctional (in the large gallery) showcases contemporary wood art, sculpture, photos,
installation art and videos that subvert and satirize function. Artists from
all over the world were asked to explore and interpret ideas of function and
dysfunction in this dynamic juried show. The works presented evoke a sense of
humor, fun, curiosity and suspicion
—ranging from a prickly chair to a set of dinosaur-like spoons and many other
imaginative creations.
Unknitting: Challenging Textile Traditions (in the small gallery) highlights the work of four artists who are advancing and
questioning established textile traditions. By addressing stereotypes of gender
and challenging the domestic-based, utilitarian objects that are typical of the
knitted crafts, the work of these artists completely upends tradition.
An opening reception will be held on July 17 from 5:30 p.m.-8 p.m.
The Houston Center for Contemporary Craft is located at 4848 Main Street and is
open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday, noon-5 p.m. HCCC will be
closed on Sundays during July and August. For more information, call
