In an evening billed as “A Hero’s Journey,” Sen. John McCain will receive the Holocaust Museum Houston’s prestigious Lyndon Baines Johnson Moral Courage Award on May 4. The former
presidential candidate is being honored for his remarkable heroism as a
prisoner of war from 1967 to 1973.
Kelli and Martin Fein and Ileana and Michael Trevino are chairing this always memorable event. For more information, call
713-942-8000, ext. 129.
Not to be outdone by the ladies, some heavy hitting gents are doing a great job
with their Men of Distinction luncheon May 6. This year,
Dr. Denton A. Cooley, Drayton McLane and Virgil Waggoner are the honorees, with Jack Kendall serving as chair. It’s the highest luncheon ticket in town—$750 per person—but it’s always a sellout. Proceeds go to children’s programs at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital.
If you are a zoo lover (and who isn’t?), here’s an event you don’t want to miss! It’s the Beasts Go On Houston Zoo Friends Family Party on Friday, May 1, at (where
else?) the Houston Zoo. Chairs
Sherri Hughey and Kelley Lubanko are giving this bi-annual event an edgy vibe with “Hippie Chic” the party attire. There’ll be a teen room with D.J., “touch” animals, a sea lion show, roller skater entertainer, hula hoop girl and on and
on. Call 713-533-6584 for tickets.
Susan G. Baker is a true Texas treasure and will be honored as such at the Treasures of Texas
Gala on May 7. The evening is chaired by
Peggy and Bill Barnett and honorary gala chairs George H.W. Bush and Mrs. Barbara Bush, Judge Ed and Gwen Emmett and Mayor Bill and Andrea White. Susan will receive the Ima Hogg Award for her national efforts to address
homelessness.
How cute is this? Doggies attend free when their humans pay $100 to attend the
2nd annual
“Project Derek Dog” competition May 2 at the Derek Hotel benefiting CAP. Animal communicator Sonya Fitzpatrick will be “talking” to a few special 4-legged friends, according to chairs Bruce Padilla and Kim Moody. It’s a great chance to find out exactly what your dog has been trying to tell you
for years!
John Havard, president/CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Houston, and his wife, Cissy, are the honorees of the 21st Annual Steak & Burger Dinner on May 6. John is truly one of this city’s unsung heroes. I met John in 1989 when he asked me to help start a golf
tournament for the clubs, and we did
—for 10 successful years. John grew up attending Boys Clubs, got a college
scholarship, and then returned to make the clubs his life
’s work. John is retiring and all his friends and supporters will gather to wish
him well, along with many of the kids he helped along the way.
