museum district day, sept. 12
Get ready to enjoy a free day in the Houston Museum District on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Board a free bus shuttle and spend the entire day exploring favorite museums and discovering new destinations.
Museum District Day will feature fascinating exhibitions, hands-on activities, demonstrations and performances throughout the day. heroes for children hosts poker tournament benefit, sept.  17
Heroes for Children, a nonprofit organization providing financial and social assistance to Texas families with children battling cancer, hosts its men-only fundraiser, Hold ‘Em for Heroes, at The Houston Racquet Club on Sept. 17. The event raises funds to support families with children battling cancer by reducing the financial burden that often accompanies cancer treatment.
The guy’s night out, Hold ’Em for Heroes event begins at 7:30 p.m. The goal is to raise over $56,000 to help support several hundred Texas families through help with hotel bills, utility bills, mortgages, medical bills and much more.

race for the cure pasta party & auction, oct. 1
Help kick off the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure with friends, family and/or business associates on Thursday, Oct. 1,at the Westin Galleria from 6 p.m.-9:30 p.m. Festivities include dinner, silent and live auctions, plus a few other fun surprises. 25th annual caesar salad competition, oct. 2
The 25th annual Caesar Salad Competition will be held on Oct. 2 from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. at Allen Center, 400 Dallas Street.
Houston’s top chefs/restaurateurs will compete for the title of Best Caesar Salad.  Awards will be given in four categories—Best Classic Caesar, Most Creative Caesar, the coveted Consumers’ Choice and Best Overall Presentation. Members of the Cardini family—direct relatives of Caesar Cardini, inventor of the Caesar salad—will be a part of the quarter-century festivities. There will also be a silent auction featuring dining and lodging opportunities, as well as other unique items.
Event proceeds benefit the Food & Beverage Managers’ Educational Endowment.Tickets are $35 and include food and wine. Tickets will be sold at the door. Advance tickets can be purchased at www.caesarsaladcompetitionhouston.com. Valet parking is available at the Doubletree Hotel Houston Downtown for $5.

texas star shines for st. jude gala, oct. 3
The Texas Star Shines for St. Jude Gala will be held on Oct. 3 at 6 p.m. at the Omni Hotel in Houston.
Tickets are $150 each or tables are available from $1,500. Proceeds will benefit St. Jude Children ’s Research Hospital.

Craft’s Fall exhibitions
Houston Center for Contemporary Craft’s fall exhibitions include the “Texas Masters Series” featuring Rachelle Thiewes and “Celebrating Our Creative Spirit” featuring the Texas Federation of Fiber Artists. Thiewes is a jeweler, metal artist and professor of metal arts at the University of Texas at El Paso.
At the exhibit by the Texas Federation of Fiber Artists, visitors can expect to see a wide range of exceptional fiber art including quilts, embroidery, collage, tapestry, sculpture and much more by fiber artists from across the state. bayou city art festival
Houston’s nationally-ranked Bayou City Art Festival Downtown is set for Oct. 10-11. The juried
fine art festival, framed by Houston’s world-class skyline, is a one-of-a-kind outdoor gallery with its highly acclaimed mix of visual, performing, culinary and interactive arts. This year, 850 national and international artists vied for 300 juried positions, a nearly 20 percent increase over 2008.
With the open air format, art lovers can interact with artists while enjoying downtown ’s pedestrian promenades and booth lined streets during the two-day festival.
An arts and entertainment destination for the entire family, Bayou City Art Festival Downtown features the popular Capital One Bank Creative Zone for children to experience the fun of making art projects they can take home. Other offerings include the Houston Arts Alliance performance stage with continuous multi-cultural musical and dance shows and close-up art demonstrations, such as origami, pottery and guitar making.   A bevy of restaurants and wine cafes will offer American and international fare to satisfy taste buds of all ages. New this fall will be the “Epicurean Adventure,” boasting wine tastings and cooking demonstrations by professional chefs.

2009 komen houston race for the cure, oct. 3
The 19th Annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is set for Oct. 3 and will begin and end at Sam Houston Park downtown.
The Komen Houston Race for the Cure® is a certified USATF 5K course with running and walking events for everyone including a Family Walk/Kids K (approximately 1/2 mile), a 5K Timed Competitive Run, a 5K Non-Competitive Run and a 5K Walk.
Returning this year is the popular Sleep in for the Cure, an extension of Race for the Cure that allows people to participate in the cause from the comfort of their own bed.
Opening ceremonies begin at 7:45 a.m. with the first race starting at 8 a.m. Participants can enjoy the Sponsor Expo where they will be able to sample products and food from the race sponsors and enjoy live entertainment. Kids for the Cure Corral offers face painting and games for children 10 and under.
Entry fees are $30 for adults; $15 for children; $25 for survivors and an additional $5 for the competitive run. Registration for Sleep in for the Cure is $50 and includes a Race T-shirt, snooze bib and Race bib (just in case you change your mind) and specialty item. The Mary Jo Peckham Award Luncheon and Fashion Show by Elizabeth Anthony and Esther Wolf will be held on Oct. 8 at River Oaks Country Club beginning at 11 a.m.
The event will benefit the philanthropic programs of the Assistance League of Houston. Sanford and Susan Criner are the honorees and Jan Carson will serve as the mistress of ceremonies.

lpga tour championship,
nov. 17-22
The 2009 LPGA Tour Championship will be held Nov. 17-22 at The Houstonian Golf & Country Club. The event will feature a field of 120 of the top LPGA professionals in the world, a $1.5 million purse and a unique format that will see a cut after 36 holes to the low 70 professionals and an additional cut after 54 holes to the low 30 pros.
Tickets for the 2009 LPGA Tour Championship can be purchased online at www.lpgatourchampionship.org or by phone at 877-LPGA-TIX. The cost for daily tickets, which allow grounds access for any one day of tournament week (Wednesday-Sunday) is $20. Daily parking passes are also available for $5 each. Weekly grounds passes are $60 and allow access to the tournament grounds for the entire week. All weekly ticket purchases also include one complimentary weekly parking pass.
Volunteers are also needed at the event to help in a variety of ways including player transportation, working the main scoreboard and assisting the media with gathering stats. The volunteer package is priced at $55. To complete an application online, go to the Web site.
